Digital UK to lead on Channel Clearance

As most CAI members are aware, the reallocation of cleared TV frequencies and the consequences is occupying a good deal of CAI time.

A recent meeting in Watford of the CAI technical committee, interested members, along with OFCOM and the BBC attracted a full compliment of delegates.  The aim here was to expose the dispute over the number of households who could be affected by spectrum being occupied by LTE and White Space devices.

Digital UK (DUK) has just announced it has been asked to lead the delivery of the clearance of Channels 61 and 62 in the 800MHz band of spectrum, paving the way for the launch of the next generation of mobile services. The public-facing part of this work will start in late 2012 and will continue during 2013.

From today (28 November), DUK’s  online postcode checker and website will provide information on the timings of these changes and the implication for viewers.

DUK calculate one-in-four households in the UK are likely to be affected. Those viewers will need to retune their digital televisions and set top boxes as multiplexes shuffle around.   DUK plan to publicise retune dates through the local media and on-screen messages. Their website and advice line (08456 505050) will provide advice on retuning and troubleshooting.
