Latest News from BBC on Bilsdale Transmitter Fire - Problems with television and radio services in North Yorkshire and Teesside

What's happened at Bilsdale transmitter?

A fire at the transmitter site has caused disruption to all services from the site. The process to restore services using a combination of temporary structures and existing infrastructure elsewhere in the region has started.

You can find the most recent developments and updates to how services are being restored below.

Services that have been restored

Unless otherwise stated use our transmitter checker tool to check if your address is in coverage of the restored transmitters or services.

Television:

**Updated 15th August**

Eston Nab transmitter - Viewers in the Hartlepool and Redcar and the eastern edges of Middlesbrough should now be able to receive their television services from this transmitter. To receive from it you may need to retune your television.

Commercial multiplexes have now been added to the transmitter some viewers may need to re-tune again to receive the restored commercial services.

If an auto-tune has not worked you could try a manual retune. See our page on how to manually retune to the Eston Nab transmitter for these services. (Note as this is a temporary service the coverage prediction in the transmitter checker tool is not accurate)

Guisborough transmitter – is back on air transmitting BBC standard and high definition channels.

Whitby transmitter – is back on air transmitting BBC standard and high definition channels.

Limber Hill transmitter - is back on air transmitting BBC standard and high definition channels.

Radio:

**Updated 12th August**

BBC Radio Tees

  • from the Whitby transmitter on 95.8FM
  • from Eston Nab transmitter on 95.0FM. Listeners in the north of the region, especially Middlesbrough, Hartlepool and Stockton-on-Tees

For advice on how to improve your FM Radio reception please see our FM installation help guide.

Impact to DAB and FM Radio

DAB radio - Listeners to the BBC’s national radio services on digital radio in the area may find their signal is weaker than usual. Satisfactory reception should continue to be possible in many cases. There is no need to re-tune, and ensuring aerials are fully extended and placed near windows will get the best reception from the other digital radio transmitters in the area.

BBC Radio York - has reduced digital radio coverage across North Yorkshire, but satisfactory reception should continue to be possible for many listeners. There is no need to re-tune, and ensuring aerials are fully extended and placed near windows will get the best reception from the other digital radio transmitters in the area. BBC Radio York on FM is unaffected.

BBC Radio Tees - has reduced coverage but satisfactory reception should be possible for most listeners. There is no need to re-tune and ensuring aerials are fully extended and placed near windows will get the best reception from the other digital radio transmitters in the area

Listeners to the BBC’s national radio services on FM should attempt to re-tune to a neighbouring transmitter.

Alternative ways to access our services

All the BBC’s television services are available via iPlayer and radio services via BBC Sounds.  Digital Satellite and Virgin users are not affected.

You can get regular updates from the BBC here and from Freeview here
