Disney+ Signs Football Content Deal with The Overlap

Disney+ has agreed a one-year sponsorship and content deal with football media platform The Overlap, expanding its sports and entertainment offering in the UK and Ireland for the 2026-27 football season.

The agreement covers two programmes: Stick to Football, hosted by Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Jill Scott, Ian Wright and Roy Keane, and the new Stick to United with Wayne Rooney, hosted by Wayne Rooney and Mark Goldbridge.

Stick to United with Wayne Rooney will begin streaming weekly on Disney+ from 18 August, followed by Stick to Football from 20 August. Disney+ will carry 40 new editions of Stick to Football, with 20 available exclusively on the platform for a limited period. Six separately commissioned international episodes will remain exclusive to Disney+.

The new 50-part Stick to United series will also be distributed through Disney+ and The United Stand's YouTube channel, with extended versions available exclusively on Disney+. The standard programmes will continue to be available through The Overlap's existing YouTube channels and audio platforms, meaning the agreement does not make the shows fully exclusive to Disney+.

The deal comes as streaming platforms increasingly invest in sports-related entertainment and personality-led content to complement live sports rights. It also follows Netflix's partnership with Goalhanger for The Rest Is Football, featuring Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards.

Disney+ said the Overlap programmes will complement its existing entertainment catalogue and ESPN offering. The move forms part of a wider sports strategy for the streaming service, which is also incorporating ESPN programming and live sports rights into its platform.

The partnership highlights the growing competition between streaming platforms for sports audiences and original sports content, with established football personalities and digital-first formats becoming an increasingly important part of the streaming landscape.
