Sky Extends SES Satellite Deal Into Next Decade
Sky has extended its long-standing satellite capacity agreement with SES, ensuring that its direct-to-home (DTH) satellite services will continue across the UK and Republic of Ireland into the next decade.
Under the new multi-year agreement, Sky will continue using SES satellite capacity at the 28.2° East orbital position to deliver television services to millions of households. The partnership dates back to 1988 and has supported Sky's satellite TV services for almost four decades.
The agreement comes as Sky continues to expand its internet-delivered services through Sky Glass and Sky Stream. However, the company says satellite remains an important part of how it delivers services to customers across the UK and Ireland, providing the reach and reliability required by its satellite customers.
SES operates the Astra 2E, 2F and 2G satellites at 28.2° East, which is its principal orbital position for DTH services in the UK and Ireland. The latest agreement extends the relationship beyond the previously disclosed 2029 timeframe, although the precise duration, number of transponders and financial value of the new deal have not been disclosed.
SES said the renewal demonstrates the continued role of satellite in delivering premium television at scale, highlighting its reach, reliability and resilience. The agreement indicates that satellite and IP-based delivery will continue to operate alongside each other as Sky develops its range of viewing options.
