The BBC has confirmed that BBC Three, BBC Scotland and BBC Radio 4 Extra will end their linear broadcast services in spring 2027 as part of plans to save £500 million by 2028.
BBC Three content will move to BBC iPlayer and other platforms, including YouTube, with increased investment in programming for younger audiences. BBC Scotland will continue on iPlayer, with content also available on BBC One and BBC Two in Scotland. Radio 4 Extra programmes will move to BBC Sounds.
The changes form part of wider cost-cutting measures, with around 100 additional job cuts also planned at BBC News. The closures reflect the BBC’s shift towards digital viewing as it responds to financial pressures and changing audience habits.
The move highlights the continuing transition away from traditional linear broadcasting towards streaming and on-demand services.
