First generation Sky boxes will finally become redundant next year, after Sky confirmed to customers that it will be making major technical changes to its service next year.
• Further standard definition (SD) channels on Sky will close in 2024. • Broadcast parameters will change meaning older boxes will no longer receive services
This follows the BBC’s decision to close all of its standard definition channels in January. Viewers hoping that their older Sky receivers will continue to receive service other channels will be disappointed. Sky has indicated these receivers will become obsolete during 2024. It’s been writing letters to customers still using an older box. This will affect subscribers in both the UK and the Republic of Ireland with any of the first generation, non-HD Sky receivers.
Sky+HD and Sky Q boxes are unaffected, and will continue to receive satellite TV channels, although Sky+HD boxes don’t have access to the interactive and streaming services offered by Sky Q.
In order to help us lobby Government and Ofcom to try to stop building developers from de-specifying TV Systems from new developments, we’d like as many members as possible to lobby their local MP on this matter. This has proved an effective means of opening channels of communication in the past, so we’re keen to try again.
In order to help this, we’ve prepared a letter template that you can adapt and send to your local MP. You can include an example of a local development that you know has no TV system being installed – the part that’s current in italics, or remove that section if you don’t want to give a specific example.

It has come to our attention that a few developers are looking to specify data only networks in some new developments, probably due to misleading information from ISP’s or consultants. This is simply an attempt to increase their margins at the expense of their customers, although probably due to the misinformation they receive. We believe that developers should be made aware of the following before reaching similar decisions:

The BBC has confirmed it is putting out additional messages on its satellite version of BBC One SD ahead of the service’s closure in early 2024. Viewers with legacy Sky and Freesat receivers will now see extra messaging, in addition to that currently shown during regional news slots. Sky satellite viewers will also see the messaging on the standard definition copy of BBC One that is carried on channel 801. The message currently pops-up in between selected programmes.
In a positive move for hopes of continuing DTT broadcasts until at least 2034, the government has set out proposals that intend to see the country’s current local TV channels remain on the nation’s airwaves until then, subject to a review by Ofcom.
